The ceramics
The quality of the clay and the ability of the local craftsmen made Santo Stefano di Camastra the greatest production center of ceramics in Sicily. The artists of the ceramics succeed in creating plates, water jugs, vases and tiles with always new colors and shapes. The common characteristics of the production are the geometric decorations in the Luigi XIV style, the brilliance of enamels, the elegant decorations and the typical taste of the Sicilian peasant history. The used colors, the green branch, the yellow from the shadings orange, the blue and the tawny manganese, are to be noticed by their elegance and brilliance. The maiolicate tiles of Santo Stefano are exported in all Italy and the tradition that accompanies them goes back to the XVIII-th century. The craftsmen dug the clay, coming from mines situated along the seaside road that leado to Palermo coming from Messina, then they pushed the clay within wood boxes and signed with the brand of the factory. When dry,the clays took the shapes of the characteristic tile 20 x 20 centimeters long. Then the tiles came cooked in furnaces by firewood. After twenty hours of baking and fourty-eight hours of cooling the tiles came decorated and colored. A second baking session ,following the same times and ways of the first one, completes the production cycle. In XIX the century, in order to satisfy the increased demand, the production begins to be conducted in an industrial way. |
