Saponara (Zip Code 98047) is 318 km. distant from Agrigento, 251 km. from Caltanissetta, 119 km. from Catania, 210 km. from Enna, 26 km. from Messina, which province it belongs to, 243 km. from Palermo, 223 km. from Ragusa, 177 km. from Siracusa, 342 km. from Trapani.

The municipality has 4.262 inhabitants and an area of 2.602 hectares for a population density of 164 inhabitants per square kilometre. It rises on a hilly area and is 180 metres above sea-level.

Agricultural production is based upon production of citrus fruit, olives, and fruit and garden growings.
Saponara is so called for being full of plans called in vulgar way "saponara". It has called Saponara Villafranca till 1952 when it became an autonomous commune.

It belonged to different feudatories: Russos, Cruillas, Marinos, Castagnas, Montecatenis. In 1860 it was acquired by duke Vincenzo Di Giovanni and it the second half of the XVIII century Domenico Alliata became its lord, he was already prince of Villafranca.
The most interesting monument is the Cathedral Church of early of the XVII century. Inside it is possible to see the canvas representing St. Nicola and splendid frescos which decorate walls inside apses, works made by the painter G. Crestadoro (1711-1808).
