Scaletta Zanclea (Zip Code 98029) is 274 km. distant from Agrigento, 208 km. from Caltanissetta, 82 km. from Catania, 179 km. from Enna, 17 km. from Messina, which province it belongs to, 276 km. from Palermo, 186 km. from Ragusa, 140 km. from Siracusa, 375 km. from Trapani.
The municipality has 2.716 inhabitants and an area of 505 hectares for a population density of 538 inhabitants per square kilometre. It rises along the coast on a flat area and is 8 metres above sea-level.

Main economic activities are agriculture, breeding and handicraft. Products mostly cultivated are citrus fruit, cereals, olives, fruit.

Breedings present are goatish and sheep ones. Handicraft is based upon wood working, embroideries, manufacture of bow-nets and of boats.
The name derives from natural stairs which joint the upper part to the lower part of the village and from Zankle (sickle).
The oldest settlement dates back to the XVI century, it was developed round a castle of the XIII century.

At first it was domination of Marcheses then Rodrigo Ventimiglia and in 1672 it passed to Ruffo and Spadafora families.
The most interesting monuments are the Castle (since 1970 it is property of Commune which has provided for its repair); the Church of St. Nicolò of the XVII century and the baroque house of Ruffo family, lords of Scaletta Zanclea since 1672.
Its pride are mayorettes, considered with those of Randazzo the most skilful of Sicily.
