Tourism in Scaletta Zanclea
Going along the coast street which gets from Messina to Catania it is possible to admire, at a certain moment, the Castle of Scaletta Zanclea, an imposing building made up of three floors which raises on the top of a hill.
It is reachable through some little streets furnished with large steps which go up to the inhabited centre.
The building of the Castle probably dates back to Swabian period.

In 1240 the fortress was took away to the lord of the castle to be granted to the imperial jurisdiction: the castle has assumed an evident role of importance in the defensive scheme of Sicily.
In 1672 Francesco Ventimiglia, marquise of Geraci, sold his rights of possession of the castle to Antonio Ruffo, dukes of Bagnara.
The introduction of artillery imposed an alteration of defensive means: the XIII-th donjon was not undergone alterations but was surrounded by a system of works among which the fortress of inspection, placed in custody of a prefect leader of garrison.
