The Castle Venetico was a feudal centre which has belonged to the Spatafora family since the XV century; in 1639 became a principality. The village gets in its inhabited centre a military building built by Spatafora in the first half of 1400: it was a palace-fortress which joins needs of defence to conforts of daily life. The Castle, placed nearly on the seashore, was planned by the architect Camillo Camilliani (1574-1603): on the upper part of the hill he set a square donjon protected by imposing towers placed in the corners.
Photo Wikipedia The admittance to the fortress immediately gets, going over a slight slope, to the floor used as residence of princes where are still a large hall paved with XVI-th century floorings, big portals made of grey stone and the cutyard paved with brickwork. On the sides of the Castle it is possible to admire two delicious fountains which seem to be included in the same architectonic complex. The fortress has been very important in defending the coats of Sicily against attacks led by Dragut (about 1500-1565), the most famous pirate of the XVI century. |
