The small town, in the ancient periods called Garinis, was built around the X century by the Arabs, not far from a sicanian settling called Hycara which was destroyed in 415 B.C. by the Athenian Nicia. The town became a feud since the times of Normans; it was under the domination of Bonello family and then it came to La Grua who gained in 1403 the title of Princes.

Interesting from artistical point of view are: the Castle, the Church of St. Vincenzo, the picturesque Duomo square with a fountain inside, the Church of St. Vito, the Cathedral Church and the Oratorio of the SS. Sacramento Company.

A character bound to this town is the baroness of Carini, Laura Lanza from Catania, famous for the familiar tragedy happened in 1563. Her husband, Vincenzo La Grua, took a fancy to another woman so he made her father believe that his wife is unfaithful so that the father, the baron Cesare Lanza, to take off the shame, killed his daughter.
