Castelbuono (Zip Code 90013) is 157 km. far from Agrigento, 107 km. from Caltanissetta, 163 km. from Catania, 88 km. from Enna, 190 km. from Messina, 97 km. from Palermo, which province it belongs to, 233 km. from Ragusa, 221 km. from Siracusa, 196 km. from Trapani.

The municipality has 9.910 inhabitants and its area covers 6.051 hectares for a density of population of 164 inhabitants per square kilometre. It rises on a hilly area and is 423 metres above sea-level.

Great is the production of cereals, olives, grapes, chestnuts as well as typical dairying production. On the territory there are also cattle and sheep breedings. In the handicraft it is important wood and textiles working.

In the ancient periods the centre was called with the Byzanthine name of Ypsigro that means cool place. In 1316 Francesco Ventimiglia made build a castle on the near hill St. Pietro, where he removed the county and the old village gave the place to Castelbuono, so-called because of the presence of the beautiful and majestic manor.
In the monumental field besides the medieval castle with a regular plan with two quadrangular towers, there is the Old Matrix dedicated to SS. Assunta, consecrated in 1494 and recently restored.
Castelbuono is a famous centre for the production of Manna, laxative got by cutting the bark of ash trees.
