The name of Polizzi has Greek origin and derives from Polis that means town. In medieval Latin it was changed into Politium.

Maybe it already had exsisted in the XI century, when the Earl Ruggero D'Altavilla made built a fortified castle. The small village gained the appositive of Generosa (generous) only in the XIII century by the king Fredrick II of Swabia.

In becoming under possession of different feudal families, Polizzi had a long period of economical and cultural growth.

Palazzo Gagliardo

The Chiesa di S. Girolamo (Church of St. Jerome), with its peculiar octagonal plan, and the Chiesa di S. Francesco (Church of St. Francis), of the XIV century that keeps two chapels made by Gagini, represent the most interesting monuments to visit in Polizzi.

Also the Palazzo Gagliardo (Gagliardo Palace) is beautiful to visit and it is made in late-manneristic style.

From this small town it is Giuseppe Antonio Borgese (1882-1952) a famous literary man and maker of the word Crepuscolarismo , from it the homonymous literary current began its course, (the Crepuscolari is in fact a school of Italian poetry contrasting with the earlier splendours of D'Annunzio and characterized by a subdued choice of subject).
