The Archaeological area of Mount Jato Laid down on southern side of mount Jato, the small town has a beautiful panoramic position which sweeps all over the below valley. Going through a path three kilometres far from the village it gets to the top of the mount in which is the archaeological area of Mount Jato. Here are ruins of the ancient elim town, characterized by the presence of solid walls Greek-roman made, with stones which are exactly cut and arranged and precarious walls of medieval period erected to be used as temporary shelter.

In the archaeological area have been found different structures which belong to different historical periods among which we mention: the Agorà, datable to 300 B.C., is characterized on western side by a portico with double file of columns and by Bouleuterion or "council hall" with a semicircular plan. The Theatre: it dates back to III century B.C. and shows a good of 35 orders of flights of steps which were the seats for audience. The area of the stage was adorned by two extra scenic areas, which were two protruding extremities which closed the wide scenic hall. The Temple of Aphrodite: It was built towards 550 B.C. accorsing to a Greek architectonic canon and of which now there are only few remains. Towards south there are wide rooms, always made by Greeks, used as shops and granaries. The house of peristyle: great elegant residence built on two floors, round an inside curtyard rounded by columns in Doric style as regards the ground floor and in Ionic style is the first floor. Into one of entertainment rooms still now it is visible a splendid floor made in opus signinum, and there is an inscription on it dedicated to guest who left the house. Also the room used as bathroom and the back-room in which it was placed a fireplace, useful for heating water, are visible. Next to bathroom it has been found a back curtyard where was a furnace for breadmaking. |
