Sciara (Zip Code 90020) is 111 km. distant from Agrigento, 119
km. from Caltanissetta, 216 km. from Catania, 124 km. from
Enna, 219 km. from Messina, 58 km. from Palermo, which
province it belongs to, 260 km. from Ragusa, 296 km. from
Siracusa, 157 km. from Trapani.
The municipality has 2.915 inhabitants and an area of
3.119 hectares for a density of population of 93 inhabitants
per square kilometre. It rises on hilly coastal area and is 210
metres above sea-level.

In Sciara's territories are cultivated some products like
olives, grapes, cereals, citrus fruit, fruit and excellent
artichokes that are displayed in the cereal feast of the
artichoke which takes place in April.
The name of Sciara has Arabic origin. But its meaning is
uncertain because it is possible to translate it both with "lava" and with "underwood". The first village was founded in the second half of the XVII
century by Filippo Notarbartolo Cipolla who gained the title
of Prince of Sciara by concession of Charles II of Spain.
The Cathedral Church of St. Anna and the ruins of the
Chiese of S. Basilio and of Sant'Elia (Churches of St. Basil
and St. Elias). Important is the archaeological area of Mount
Castellaccio where parts of megalithic and dolmen walls of
the V century B.C. are found.
