The main church

The little town, which originally was called il Biscari, had its current name in 1938, deriving from the word Achates used by the Romans for the river Dirillo. The first papers testifying the existence of the feud of Biscari date back to the 13th century.

In 1580 the town became property of the Paternòs of Catania. The first prince Agostino Paternò Castello moved the village upriver, establishing the current location of Acate. The town, destroyed by the earthquake in 1693, was rebuilt later.

The historical centre is very beautiful, and the most important monuments are the Palace of the Princes  of Biscari built in 1493, the church of S.Vincenzo (1643) where the saint's remains are kept, and the Mother Church of S.Nicolò built in 1660.

Amongst the famous people we mention the art critic Enzo Maganuco, who worked on the drawing up of the Italian Encyclopaedia.
