The municipality has 1.247 inhabitants, its surface measures 5.157 hectares and its population density counts 24 inhabitants for square kilometre. It rises inland over a hilly area, 750 metres above the sea-level.

The Town Hall is located in corso Vittorio Emanuele n. 101, tel. 0931-878273 fax. ++39 0931-878476, toll free number 800271018 (only for italian residence).

It is mainly an agricultural centre, and it produces wheat, forages, olives and fruit. There are also cow and sheep farms.

The word Buscemi comes from the Arab Qalat-abi-sciama, according to Edrisi, an Arab geographer.

It was turned into a feud in the Norman period, and during the centuries it was governed by many lords: the Calvellos up to the Sicilian Vespers, the Ventimiglias up to 1519, the Requisens up to the 19th century.

The ruins of the Arab castle

The village, originally situated on Mount St. Nicolò, was rebuilt south after the earthquake in 1693.

Among the most interesting monuments we mention the Mother Church (18th century), the Baroque Church of St. Anthony from Padua, the ruins of the Arab castle and the Requisens' castle and the Church of San Giacomo.
