The name of the town comes from the nearby town of Lentini and King Carlo V, to whom it was dedicated by the viceroy Giovanni De Vega in 1551.

It was built on the plateau of Meta hill, to protect the coast from the Turkish attacks.

Initially it was inhabited by poor people, but after the earthquake in 1693, a lot of people moved in there from the nearby villages.

Amongst the most important monuments we include the Mother Church rebuilt after 1693 and the church of the Carmine.

A peculiarity in Carlentini is the so-called "House of Sirocco", a well conditioned room where people can shelter themselves from the African hot wind.

It is inside the Baroness Maria Pezzino's summer house.
