The name of the town comes from the contraction of the word Ferula, a plant once used to make stools.

The historical evidences are very few, but looking at the structure of the street layout, one can easily deduce that it was conquered by the Arabs.

San Sebastiano Church

Destroyed by the earthquake in 1693, it was later rebuilt North from the original medieval settlement.

Amongst the main monuments we mention the Mother Church, destroyed in 1693 by the earthquake and later rebuilt, the church of St. Sebastian and the church of St. Anthony, both rebuilt after the earthquake.

The people from Cassaro always say that Ferla is Judas's town, because once, the people from Ferla, exasperated by a terrible dry spell, threw a statue of Christ into a dry drinking trough.
