The name of the town comes from its founders' name, the dukes of Floridia Flavia Bonaiuto and Lucio Bonanno Colonna, who founded it in 1628.
In 1825 it became an autonomous municipality. Many buildings were damaged by the earthquake in 1908, and later they had to be reconstructed.
Some monuments are artistically very important: the Mother Church, started in the 18th century and finished in the 19th century, the picturesque church of the Madonna of the Graces, also called of the Garden, founded in 1720 by the Spaniards, and the church of St. Anne built in 18th century.
The wine from Floridia is well known for its genuineness and alcoholic strength. There is also a nice saying exhorting a moderate drinking: "Amicu ti sugnu, ma Sciurdianu mi chiamu!", that means "I am your friend, but I am also Floridian!" (people from Floridia are called Sciurdiani in dialect).
