The town of Francofonte

Tourism in Francofonte

The Mother Church

Francofonte, a charming town stretching over a hill, has a delightful Mother Church.
The church, destroyed by the 1693 earthquake, was rebuilt in 1699 thanks to the economical support of the people, as well as Marquis Ferdinando Francesco Gravina, Lord of Francofonte.
During the years, the church underwent many changes.

The church has a Latin cross plan and divided in three naves.
The altars of the side naves are adorned by valuable paintings.
On the right nave altar you can see The ecstasy of St. Jerome by Ribera (1588-1652) and The Madonna of the Graces by anonymous.

The side chapels are really beautiful and rich of paintings: in the chapel dedicated to the Madonna of the Rosary there is a painting representing the Holy Virgin attributed to Pietro Novelli (1603-1647); in the chapel dedicated to the Madonna of the Show you can admire La Patrona, a 15th century Catalan masterpiece. All altars are in different colour and vein marble.

The dome in adorned by stuccoes and frescoes of great effect, the sacristy is furnished with solid walnut furniture.
