The tunny fishing factory Portopalo of Capo Passero is a small town situated at the very South-eastern end of Sicily. Its people live fishing: they are mainly fishermen and during the summer they warmly welcome tourists. Rich in tradition is the ritual played every morning when boats arrive at the fishing harbour: people crowd the quay and the lively sale of fish starts. In front of Portopalo there is the little isle of Capo Passero and right the stripe of water between the isle and Sicily is the strategic point for tunny fishing.

That is why during the whole 20th century the tunny fishing factory, the Baron of Belmonte's property, worked actively. The tunny fishing is made of nets placed in a way to form underwater rooms where fish are channeled. There are also premises for tinning (now into disuse), the house of the raìs (the chief of the fishermen and the one who directs the mattanza - the tunny killing), and the residence of the noble family - the owners. The tunny fishing now attracts a lot of people who come here to enjoy a bloody show which offers conflicting emotions. |
