Melons are one of the more important and old products of the agriculture in Trapani territory.
Sown between March and April the melons are picked up since June and their main characteristic is their "preservability", that is very important for the gradual introduction of this product on the market.
After the harving, traditionally they were arranged on the terraces of the houses or they were hung on the balconies. For this reason they took the name of "winter melons".
The main varieties are two: the one cultivated in Paceco, called "cartucciaro" with a longer shape, crooked at the end and with a smooth and yellow peel.
The second variety is cultivated in the north of the territory of Alcamo. This latter winter melon il called "purceddu" and is characterized by a green and wrinkled peel and a oval shape, more rounded than the "cartucciaro" one.
Both of them have got a white and juicy pulp that become sweeter as time passes.
