Calatafimi (Zip Code 91013) is 150 Km. distant from Agrigento, 211 Km. from Caltanissetta, 318 Km. from Catania, 230 Km. from Enna, 328 Km. from Messina, 69 Km. from Palermo, 286 Km. from Ragusa, 367 Km. from Siracusa, 38 Km. from Trapani, which province it belongs to.

The municipality has 7.379 inhabitants and its area measures 15.475 hectares; its population density is of 48 inhabitants per square kilometre. Calatafimi rises on a hilly area in the inside zone, placed 300 metres above the sea-level.

The Town hall is placed in piazza Municipio n. 9, ++39 tel. 0924-951988 fax. ++39 0924-951021.

Among its agricultural products we can mention: wheat, fruit, citrus fruit, table and wine grapes. Cattle and sheep breedings are present.

Calatafimi rose in the XII century during the Arabic period (Kalat-al-Fimi) round the Eufemio's Castle a Byzantine stronghold. During the XIV century the town strengthens its strategical role. In fact the Aragonese rebuild the castle and surround the inhabited place with walls. Calatafimi is connected to the battle against the Bourbons, won by Garibaldi, during the advance of the Thousand towards the chief town (May 15 1860). It was decisive for the war in Sicily.

Among the monuments we can mention the Cathedral Church of the XII century, where in the apse is present a big marble altar-piece by B. Berrettaro. On the rock it is possible to admire the remains of the Medieval castle, while an the hill's top, about 3 km, the Pianto Romano rises, a Sacrarium devoted to the Garibaldian fallen in the same battle.

The "SS.Crucifix Feast" is famous. It takes place every five years (1st-3rd May); on this occasion a majestic procession is held and every kind of corporation is present: one of which is Massari's that is different from the others because it has a particular decoration, made of "bread", on the cart.
