The Cretto by Burri In the night between 14 and 15 january 1968 a violent earthquake destroyed till the foundations the town of Gibellina and with it even the history, culture, values and hopes of the inhabitants.
To remembereternally that tragedy, the ruins of the ancient town of Gibellina have been changed in a work of art by Alberto Burri, who covered the ruins with a white cement flow but he left the road network unchanged: it is the so-called Cretto by Burri.

It is like an immense sudarium that just in the traces excavated in the streets it still seems to evoke the life that every day took place there. In this locality, every year Orestiadi of Gibellina are performed. It is a programm of theatrical performances which go beyond the theatre to become genuine events.
