The church of Our Lady of Sorrows

It was founded in 397 B.C. by Phoenicians fled from Mozia after the defeat suffered by people of Siracusa.

It was dominated at first by the Romans and then by the Arabs, who called it Marsah el Alì o MARSA ALLAH later changed into Marsala.

In this period it became one of the most important port of Mediterranean.

The wina industry was introduced by John Woodhouse in 1773, then by the Ingham and by the Florio.

During the Risorgimento, Marsala became very famous; in fact it was the place where the expedition of Thousand, under Garibaldi's leadership, landed on 11 May 1860.

In the artistical field we can find the monumental complex St. Pietro, the Town Theatre of the XVIII century and the former Convento of the Itria restored and used as municipal offices.

In the Stagnone of Marsala is placed Mozia's isle, the most important Phoenician colony of Sicily. It has a dry dock with a paved ground, fortifications, mosaics and an archaeological museum.

An unknown episode is about the bishop Pescasino from Marsala: it was himself who fixed the data of Easter in 444 to satisfy Pope Leone I's demand.
