Salaparuta (Zip Code 91020) is 113 km. distant from Agrigento, 183 km. from Caltanissetta, 305 km. from Catania, 224 km. from Enna, 325 km. from Messina, 66 km. from Palermo, 249 km. from Ragusa, 330 km. from Siracusa, 66 km. from Trapani which province it belongs to.

The municipality has 1.892 inhabitants and an area of 4.167 hectares for a density of population of 45 inhabitants per square kilometre. The town rises on a hill zone, 385 metres above sea-level.

Among its agricultural products there are cereals, olives, melons and grapes.

Salaparuta is a centre of Arabic origin called Menzil Salh (the lady's farm-house), it became a feud in the XV century and belonged to the Paruta, who founded the urban centre at the foot of the Medieval castle.

Entirely destroyed by the earthquake of the Belice in 1968, there remained only rubble. It was completely rebuilt on a slope, according to a plan that moved totally people. The installation is at intervals interrupted by array residential zones and by public organizations.

As regards the artistic field there are only the ruins of the Medieval Castle and a valuable statue of St. Caterina, saved intact from rubble of the earthquake that is possible to see in the restored Cathedral Church.

An old popular tradition wants, that dust sweeped from churches' floor on Palm-Sunday, sprinkled in the fields, to propitiate rain in case of drought.
