Tourism in Valderice

The Bonagia tuna station

Between the XVIII and the early part of the XX century in Sicily worked about 80 tuna stations, divided along all the 1039 kilometres of the coast.

In the north and north-west Sicily, from Peloro to Lilybeo were let down the settling down to capture tunas in their love-journey through sea in pursuing places where they could couple and reproduce.

This is called settling down at a run.

Along Ionian coasts and on southern side, from Siracusa to Mazara, fishermen fished tunas, so-called return, launched towards columns of Hercules through which they had got in the Mediterranean at the same time in which Pleiads were appearing in the sky.

Now in Sicily are only two tuna stations, both are in sea round Trapani: Bonagia's and Favignana's.

The former still now has, on the average, more than one thousand of tunas every season and, in this way, it supplies a decine of families with labour and welfare.

The latter is the queen of the sea since Florio's time.

Bonagia' tuna station kept still intact its fascination.

Simple and genuine men with their never told tales and images not corrupted by tourists' presence, song murmured with half-open lips without shouting them to lit up recorders.
