Population and territory

The province of Caltanissetta counts 283.872 inhabitants. It covers a surface of 2,128 squared kilometers, the population density is therefore 133 inhabitants for square kilometer.

Infrastructures
The street network consists of 13 kilometers of freeways, of approximately 283 kilometers of state roads, of provincial roads for 690 kilometers, of communal roads for 350 kilometers and of regional roads for 97 kilometers. The railway counts just a single railroad: 71 kilometers are suitable for diesel trains while 65 kilometers are suitable for electric trains.

Tourism
Despite the presence of various hotels, lodges, farm shelters, and the remarkable efforts made by several Governative Agencies the province of Caltanissetta accounts just for a bit less than 1% of the regional tourist traffic.

Labor market
The labor market in the province continues to be characterized by one of the the most elevated unemployment rate among those of Southern Italy, above to the average regional and nearly double regarding the national one, with a total percentage of unemployed people beyond 27%. The situation turns out to be particularly serious for youngest people, for which some social aids are available, such as temporary employment for carrying on activities of social interest.
