Population and territory
The province of Catania counts 1.092.375 inhabitants. It covers a surface of 3552.20 kilometers squared the population density is therefore 307.52 inhabitants for square kilometer.
Infrastructures
The province is equipped with an airport, that one of Catania-Fontanarossa, of numerous commercial and industrial portsas well as of ports of armament for fishery fleets. Various state roads connect together all towns each other, moreover the territory is crossed by the A18 freeway Messina-Catania and the A19 freeway Palermo-Catania. There are 40 Km. of freeways, 471 Km. of state roads, 203 Km. of regional roads, 1.510 Km. of provincial roads and 891 Km. of other roads, for a total of 3,115 kilometers of roads. There are 229 Km. of railroads: 141 Km. have a single, non electrified rail, 62 Km. have a single and electrified rail and 26 Km. have a duoble and electrified rail.
Tourism
The province of Catania is one of the favorite destination for the tourism in Sicily: the tourists subdivide themselves fairly between catania, some centers like Aci Castello and Acireale, and the Park of the Etna. The tourists come mainly from the European Union and the United States of America, with interesting presences also from Israel, Japan, Argentine and countries of the former U.R.S.S. Initiatives have been taken in order to furthet increase the farm holidays. The province counts 80 hotels for a total of 8,373 places in 4.190 rooms and as extra-hotel receptivity, 123 exercises for a total of 8,997 places in 4.375 rooms.
Labor market
In province the unemployment rate is around 20%: the rate unemployment for males people reaches 16,7% while for female people it reaches 30.6%. The occupational crisis is related to that one affecting the great enterprises that operate in the provincial territory and to the closure of other large enterprises with loss of beyond 10,000 employees.
